RIM’s VP of Developer Relations says “We’re committed.”

Alec Saunders, RIM’s VP Developer Relations, is one of the most enthusiastic execs I’ve seen. He joined the company late September 2011 and has been fearlessly leading the dev team ever since. At BlackBerry World 2012 he proudly presented the vision for BlackBerry 10 with a promo video to developers that stated “waiting is the hardest part” and “Android and iOS they are no go for you!

RIM shocked many this week by announcing the release of their new BlackBerry 10 OS would be delayed until Q1 2013, this was due to “a large volume of incoming code.” Not the best news as RIM has been on a 23 city tour promoting the OS to developers. Over 5,000 BB10 Alpha devices have been seeded and many devs are praising their experience, which is mainly the speed of which they can build apps in the BB10 OS.

Additional rumours surfaced yesterday that Microsoft was interested in dropping some cash into RIM, potentially leaning towards a future powered by Windows Phone 8. However, late last night Saunders took to the company blog to calm the community and state “We’re committed.”

Saunders said “When we in the Developer Relations group were informed of the news, our first thoughts were with you – our development community – who are continuing to work with us to build great new applications for BlackBerry 10. You’ve got businesses to run, rent to pay, and investors to answer to. You are the folks who have skin in the game now, and aren’t just waiting for a new phone personally. We know this delay affects you, and we’re sorry… Despite yesterday’s announcement, I want you to know that we remain strongly committed to you. While RIM continues to work towards the launch of BlackBerry 10, our engagement levels and plans for our joint success have not changed… We are committed to this launch, and to continuing to work with you to make this launch a success. We will work to ensure that the launch is executed brilliantly, with a complete platform that delivers the best experience for our customers.”

It’s a respectable piece and even during the most turbulent time at the company – stock price is now a low $7.39 and their market cap is $3.81B – he’s committed to delivering the OS, plus more determined to help people make great apps and revenue.

Yes, waiting for BlackBerry 10 to arrive is the hardest part.

  1. Thats great he is committed, but it’s all too little too late. Stock will drop in the 6 range next week and if rim doesn’t swallow their pride and go android or windows they are done.

    • A VP of Developer Relations that is not “enthusiastic”?
He gets paid to be “enthusiastic” and to transmit energy and excitment about RIM products. He is good though, I like him too. Too bad he has no EXISTING product to back him up.

      -HE is comited to BB10
-WE are not. End of story.
-With BB10 Coming in 8 months ( Feb AT THE EARLIEST) we will simply have SGS3,iphone 5, WP8, Android 4.1, and Google, Moto and LG phones.

    • 7 Stages of RIM:
      -People loved them
-People HAD to wait for the next BB
-People COULDN’T wait for the next BB
-People CAN wait for BB10 in October 2012
-People DON’T wait for BB10 in FEB 2013

      As for the media:
      -RIM was the favourite child
-RIM was protected by the media
-RIM was bashed by the media (because people care and because it sell$)
-RIM is the punching line of every techno joke

To come in the next months:
-RIM is irrelevant, not enough users, no more people to fire, no more dramas, doesn’t sell enymore….Back to cover the Kardashians!

    • Trending in Twitter now:
-”How do you make a small business in Canada?”
-You take a big one and give it to Lazaridis!

      Why is Lazaridis STILL the:
Non-Independent Vice Chairman of the Board at RIMM and they fire 5,000 people (more to come)

    • Incredible: I just heard the Mayor of Waterloo saying:
“This is going to hurt RIM in the short time but I expect them to resurface in the next couple of years or so, After all they invented the pager!”

-Hold on: Stock is at $7; will be low $6s by tht end of July (with some luck) and by the time the next Q report arrives it will drop to $4.

The “Rumours” of “unnamed sources”, “inside sources, industry insiders and a guy that saw a guy with a dog that knows somebody that works at RIM: Will have less and less of an efect in the stock

The same goes to “Leaked images” or “The project is ahead of time”-leaks, and rumours about getting bought.

  3. After all the company has been through they still are way too over confident and that will be their downfall.

  7. The mobile industry is way too competitive now for RIM to wait until 2013. This is really not a good idea! I don’t see how they could make a comeback in 2013 with BB10. I’m pretty sure some big corporation will eventually buy RIM.

  11. I don’t get it… Just swallow your pride and go with Android or WP8… The hardware they make can differentiate them in both ecosystems (though I think WP8 goes more hand in hand with RIM).

BB10 might be the best thing since sliced bread (incredibly doubtful), but Q1 2013 is so risky in that carriers and consumers might not care enough to try it out.

  12. 99Playbook has a real problem with RIM. You are re-posting many stories from around the web. Get a life. (Also, consider moving out of your moms basement).

  14. Poor RIM, so jaded and complacent. I really wished them well and have a couple friends working there, but they’re actively seeking new employment. That company really brought itself down with screw up after screw up.

It’s amazing to watch a tech giant screw up so many times again and again. Every day I see a new news article about how bad things are going for them. They’ll be gone soon enough. Too bad.
